The popular rules — and where they break down
These “tricks” circulate widely, but each one has dangerous exceptions:
- “Triangular head means venomous” — harmless watersnakes flatten their heads into triangles when threatened, while deadly coral snakes have narrow, rounded heads.
- “Slit pupils mean venomous” — coral snakes have round pupils; you also should never be close enough to check.
- “Red touches yellow kills a fellow” — the rhyme only applies to some US coral snakes and fails outside North America.
- “Rattles mean danger” — true, but many rattlesnakes stay silent, and other snakes vibrate their tails in dry leaves to imitate rattles.
What actually works: identify the species
There is no single visual rule that separates venomous from harmless snakes. The only reliable method is knowing which species you’re looking at — venom is a property of the species, not a look.
