One Grocery List the Whole House Can Add To

The person who does the shopping is hardly ever the person who notices the shampoo has run out. That gap is where most household lists fall over.

If everyone in the house can add something the moment they spot it, the list starts to reflect what the house actually needs rather than what one person managed to remember.

Make adding easier than remembering

Nobody sets out to forget the milk. They notice it at seven in the morning with their hands full, decide they’ll mention it later, and later never really arrives.

What helps is making it quicker to add than to remember. One hand, a couple of seconds, from the widget on the home screen or the Apple Watch while you’re still standing at the fridge.

Knowing who added what

On a family list, an item with no context turns into a small puzzle. Is “crackers” the specific ones for lunchboxes, or will any box do?

When every item carries a name and a colour, you know exactly who to ask. Better still, whoever added it can attach a note or a photo at the time and save anyone having to ask at all.

  • A name and avatar on every item
  • A notification when someone adds something or ticks it off
  • Notes and photos for anything where the brand matters
  • One Pro Family plan covering up to six people

Resist splitting it into five lists

It’s tempting to break things up into Groceries, Chemist, Hardware and the rest. Most families do better with one standing list and automatic categories, simply because there’s one place to look and one place to add.

Keep separate lists for the things that genuinely finish — a party, a holiday, a renovation.
